Investigation Underway After Multiple Students From Walter Reed Middle School Consumed Some Type of Banned Substance
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (January 15, 2025) – At least 17 middle school students from Walter Reed Middle School were medically examined after consuming some type of banned substance.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. Firefighters and paramedics were called to Walter Reed Middle School after learning the students consumed something.
The substance reportedly looked like candy. But some of the students began to exhibit signs of an overdose.
Two students were transported to the hospital, and the rest were released to their parents.
Legal Considerations for School Overdoses
Far too many children are injured or killed from drug overdoses every year. According to UCLA Health, “An average of 22 adolescents 14 to 18 years of age died in the U.S. each week in 2022 from drug overdoses, raising the death rate for this group to 5.2 per 100,000– driven by fentanyl in counterfeit pills, new research finds.” There are a number of signs associated with an opioid overdose.
- Slow or shallow breathing
- Unresponsiveness
- Clammy skin
- Disorientation
Schools have a legal obligation to protect students from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. They must adequately monitor students at all times and enforce all rules necessary for their protection. If school officials fail to properly supervise children who are harmed by an overdose, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any student is injured at school.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- The actions of school officials leading up to the incident should be determined.
- A personal injury attorney should be contacted.
It can be hard to know where to begin if your child has been injured at school. In many cases, these drugs that infiltrate middle schools and high schools are laced with powerful synthetic opioids like fentanyl. These incidents are nearly always preventable when the right safety measures are taken. The family of any student injured at school may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
