Riverside – June Richard Lee of Hemet was arrested on August 14, 2026 amidst allegations that he sexually abused a resident at a nursing home.  Veterans Home of America faces lawsuit alleging violations of patients' rights

Incident Details

Riverside County Sheriff’s Office deputies first took up this case at a private care facility on the 6000 block of La Mesa Street in Eastvale in June 2025 upon reports of “inappropriate behavior involving an employee and a patient.” This first investigation did not garner enough evidence to identify suspect. In March 2026, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Unit assumed responsibility for this case and learned of a second victim. Upon further investigation, deputies arrested June Richard Lee, who was working under the alias Richard Bautista. He was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for lewd acts on a dependent adult, sexual battery, and forced oral copulation.

Legal Standards: Protecting Vulnerable Adults

California law treats sexual offenses against seniors and dependent adults with heightened severity. Under Penal Code § 368, both financial exploitation and physical or sexual abuse are felonies—punishable by up to 8 years per count. Additionally, Penal Code § 288(d) imposes consecutive prison terms, underscoring the seriousness of such offenses.

According to data from the National Council on Aging, 1 in 10 Americans aged 60+ report experiencing elder abuse each year. In California alone, nearly 80,000 cases are reported annually—but many incidents remain unreported, especially in caregiving environments.

Advocacy & Legal Remedies

Beyond criminal accountability, survivors and their families may pursue civil action under Civil Code § 51.7 (the Tom Bane Civil Rights Act) and § 52.4 (Elder Abuse Act). These laws enable victims to seek both damages and injunctions, and recovering compensation for medical expenses, pain & suffering, and attorney fees.
