gunVallejo – Vallejo police shot and seriously injured 24-year-old Alexander Schumann, who was likely having a mental health crisis, on August 29, 2025.

Incident Overview

Around 6:25 p.m., officers arrived at the Blue Rock Village apartment complex in the 2000 block Ascot Parkway location after a report that a man was vandalizing a vehicle. Upon arrival, Schumann allegedly approached officers while holding a weapon that resembled a handgun. Officers opened fire and wounded him. First aid was administered on the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital by helicopter.

Schumann’s firearm was later revealed to be a toy gun lacking a trigger and incapable of firing live rounds. Schumann’s father James Schumann told news sources that Schumann had been homeless recently and that he was intoxicated and wanted to be shot.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the criminal investigation. Concurrently, the city has engaged an independent investigator for administrative review, and the Critical Incident Review Board will assess departmental response and training. A community town hall is planned within the next two weeks to provide transparency and answer public questions.

Legal Considerations & Use-of-Force Standards

Under California Penal Code § 835a, deputies may only use deadly force when it is “necessary in defense of human life.” Questions in this case may include:

  • Did officers reasonably believe they were facing imminent danger?
  • Was there room to de-escalate instead of resorting immediately to lethal force?
  • How do training and department protocols guide responses to armed—but potentially non-lethal—threats?
