Background on Officer-Involved Shootings

Officer-involved shootings continue to be a source of concern throughout the Bay Area and across California. According to California Penal Code § 835a, officers may only use deadly force when it is “necessary” to defend human life and after all reasonable alternatives have been considered.

Statewide, data from the California Department of Justice shows that hundreds of police shootings occur annually.
