Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on August 13. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was in some type of medical distress.

Jail officials began life-saving measures in order to help the inmate. Sadly, Charles Wright was later pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the death remain unknown at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Los Angeles County has one of the highest rates of inmate deaths in California. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “The death toll in LA jails—the nation’s largest jail system—is driven by severe overcrowding, pervasive neglect and mistreatment, inadequate care inside jails, and a failure to offer robust alternatives to incarceration.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.

  • Inmates should get a health screening when they are first admitted.
  • Jails should do their best to prevent overcrowding.
  • Jails should be well staffed at all times.

Jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. Inmates must also receive adequate medical care for all of their health conditions. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is crucial that certain steps are taken after any inmate death.

  • Medical records related to the death should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • The actions of jail officials prior to the death should be understood.

Inmate deaths are often highly preventable. They tend to occur at jails that fail to follow constitutional standards. This may include situations where jail officials fail to properly care for inmates. It is important that inmates and their families understand that they do have rights. The family of any person that died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
