VISTA, CALIFORNIA (July 21, 2024) – A 53-year-old man identified as Chase Mitchell has tragically died while in custody at the Vista Detention Facility.

San Diego County officials are saying that the incident took place around 7:30 a.m. on Monday. Correctional officers noticed that Chase Mitchell was suffering from some type of medical condition.

He was taken to the hospital and later died on Monday evening. A full investigation into the in-custody death of Chase Mitchell remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For San Diego County Inmate Deaths

San Diego County has a particularly poor track record for the care that inmates have been given. Many of those put in custody were either homeless or suffering from a mental illness. According to one report from 10 news, over half of those arrested and put in San Diego County jails were experiencing homelessness. Jails should take a number of measures in order to protect the inmates in their care.

  • Jails should make sure all inmates have a thorough health screening.
  • Jails should make sure all inmates get the medication they need.
  • Jails should make sure that their facilities are safe and well maintained.

Every jail has a legal obligation to provide all inmates with adequate healthcare. This should begin when an inmate is first admitted. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are several ways that a jail may have failed to properly care for an inmate.

  • Jail officials may have failed to give an inmate the medication that they required.
  • Jail officials may have failed to perform periodic wellness checks on inmates.
  • Jail officials may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.

Jails are often quick to label inmate deaths as “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths listed as natural involve some amount of jail medical neglect. This could include failing to check if an inmate had any underlying medical conditions. The family of any inmate who died in custody may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
