Christopher Woods, 38, Died Under Uncertain Conditions at Los Angeles County-Based Twin Towers Correctional Facility
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (January 8, 2025) – A 38-year-old man identified as Christopher Woods has tragically died in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on December 26. There was some type of incident in the Living Area of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
Medical officers provided aid to Christopher Woods. But those efforts were not able to revive him.
Christopher Woods was later pronounced dead at the jail. This is the seventh death at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in 2024.
A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
The Twin Towers Correctional Facility has become infamous for the way that inmates there have been mistreated and abused. These instances of misconduct have resulted in numerous lawsuits. According to the LAist, “The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to pay a total of $11.5 million to settle two lawsuits that alleged negligent care at the Twin Towers jail.” There are a number of ways that correctional officers may engage in abuse or misconduct in a jail setting.
- Correctional officers may beat an inmate or use tasers when this force was not necessary.
- A jail may overuse or misuse solitary confinement.
- Correctional officers may force inmates to live in unsanitary conditions.
Much of the abuse and misconduct that takes place in a jail setting is the result of neglect. Jail officials may deny an inmate the medical care that they need. This includes denying an inmate mental healthcare. Jail officials also may have failed to properly respond to medical emergencies. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any inmate dies in custody.
- Surveillance footage related to the incident should be sought.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
Jails are supposed to be proactive about keeping inmates safe and healthy. But far too often this does not take place. Correctional officers may wait until an inmate is in serious medical distress until they will bother to intervene. To make matters worse, jail officials will virtually never accept responsibility for an inmate death in their care. This is where a civil rights attorney can help.
