Ventura, CA – Cory Meade, a 69-year-old inmate at Todd Road Jail outside Santa Paula, died while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Authorities confirmed his passing on January 24, 2025. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.
According to a statement from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Meade was booked into custody on January 10, 2025. During his detention, he was reportedly transferred to a hospital for medical care before ultimately passing away.
Investigation Into the In-Custody Death
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death through an autopsy. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau is conducting an internal review, and the agency stated that no foul play is suspected at this time.
In-custody deaths remain a pressing concern in California and across the nation, raising questions about jail conditions, medical care, and the treatment of incarcerated individuals. According to data from the California Department of Justice, hundreds of individuals die in California jails each year, with many deaths linked to inadequate medical care or systemic issues within detention facilities.
Legal Implications and Family Rights
Families of individuals who die while in custody may have legal options if negligence or inadequate medical care contributed to their loved one’s death. Under California law (Government Code § 845.6), jails are required to provide necessary medical care to individuals in custody. If a facility fails to meet this standard, legal action may be pursued.
