LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (November 12, 2024) – A 20-year-old man identified as Daejon Morgan has tragically died in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials are saying that the incident took place on November 30. The incident began in the 3400 block of cells.

The circumstances leading up to the death of Daejon Morgan remains unknown at this time. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the man.

But those efforts were not successful. The death of Daejon Morgan marks the sixth in-custody death at the Men’s Central Jail so far in 2024.

Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

The Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County has a long and sordid history. The jail was actually supposed to be shut down a long time ago. According to USC Annenberg Media, “In 2021, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to shut down Men’s Central Jail because of inhumane conditions that some describe as “living hell.” Now, 26 months later, the jail still stands with no talk of closing it anytime soon.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.

  • Jails should ensure that all inmates get a thorough health screening.
  • Jails should do their best to prevent illicit drugs from entering.
  • Jails should be adequately staffed with well-trained correctional officers.

Every person in the United States has a right to be free from cruel and unusual forms of punishment. The Supreme Court of the United States has held on numerous occasions that failing to give an inmate medical care is a form of cruel and unusual punishment. It is therefore prohibited. But this has not stopped numerous jails from failing to live up to their constitutional obligations. There are a number of ways that jails could fail to live up to their constitutional obligations.

  • Jails may have failed to give an inmate the medication that they needed.
  • Jails may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.
  • Jails may have failed to help an inmate going through an overdose or drug withdrawal.

Inmate deaths are often highly preventable. The problem is that many jails are understaffed and failing to follow safety guidelines. When mistakes are made, there tends to be little to no oversight. It is important that inmates and their families understand that they do have rights. The family of any inmate who died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
