Emil Redzic Dies After Arrest by Sheriff’s Deputies

Ukiah, CA – February 2025 – 29-year-old Emil Redzic of Ukiah tragically died February 26, 2025, after being arrested by Mendocino County sheriff’s deputies, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death.

Incident Details

Deputies responded to a call at 10:15 p.m. regarding a man exhibiting erratic behavior near Orr Creek Bridge in Ukiah. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Redzic, later identified as a local resident, in Orr Creek. After detaining him, deputies noticed that he was “exhibiting an altered level of consciousness.” Officials say that Redzic went unconscious as deputies carried him from the creek. After administering multiple doses of Narcan to Redzic, emergency personnel were called, and he was transported to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley. Despite lifesaving efforts, Redzic was pronounced dead at 11:04 p.m. where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death, pending an autopsy and toxicology results. The Sheriff’s Office has stated that they will conduct a full investigation, including reviewing body camera footage and interviewing witnesses.

Concerns Over In-Custody Deaths

Deaths occurring during or shortly after an arrest are a growing concern across California. According to data from the California Department of Justice, dozens of individuals die in law enforcement custody each year, often raising legal and ethical questions about the use of force, medical response, and detention procedures. Families seeking justice in such cases may pursue civil rights claims under 42 U.S. Code § 1983, which provides legal recourse for constitutional violations committed by government officials.

In California, state laws such as the California Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) also require agencies to report data on stops, arrests, and use-of-force incidents to ensure transparency and accountability. If an independent investigation finds misconduct or negligence in this case, the victim’s family may have legal grounds for action.

Legal Rights in Wrongful Death Cases

We at the Sehat Law Firm offer our condolences to the family of Emil Redzic.

When an individual dies in law enforcement custody, families may have the right to file a wrongful death claim if negligence or excessive force is suspected. Key legal considerations include:

  • Failure to Provide Medical Care – Law enforcement agencies have a duty to ensure that individuals in their custody receive adequate medical attention.
  • Excessive Force – If the investigation reveals that improper force was used, the victim’s family could seek legal action.
  • Failure to De-escalate – Officers are trained to use de-escalation tactics whenever possible to prevent unnecessary harm.

Families affected by in-custody deaths often struggle to obtain answers. If you or someone you know has lost a loved one in police custody, seeking legal counsel can help in navigating complex investigations and securing justice.
