Investigation Underway After Male Inmate Died Unexpectedly From Epilepsy
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (February 13, 2025) – A 29-year-old inmate has tragically died unexpectedly from epilepsy while staying at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. An inmate was staying in a cell at the 2700 block of the jail.
For undetermined reasons, they began to experience an epileptic seizure. Jail staff and medical staff began life-saving measures in order to help the inmate.
But these efforts were not successful, and he was later pronounced dead. An investigation into the death remains ongoing at this time.
Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Far too many inmates die in-custody every year in the United States. LA County jails have a particularly poor track record. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “The death toll in LA jails—the nation’s largest jail system—is driven by severe overcrowding, pervasive neglect and mistreatment, inadequate care inside jails, and a failure to offer robust alternatives to incarceration.” Jail should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.
- Jails should ensure that all inmates undergo a thorough health screening.
- Jails should ensure that inmates are given all of the medications that they need.
- Jails should perform periodic wellness checks to ensure that inmates are doing alright.
Jails must protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. They must provide inmates with adequate care for all of their medical conditions. It is common for inmates to have numerous underlying health conditions prior to being incarcerated. The Supreme Court of the United States has held time and time again that failing to give inmates adequate medical care is a form of cruel and unusual punishment and therefore unconstitutional. There are a number of ways that jails may have failed to properly care for an inmate.
- Jail officials may not have given an inmate the medication that they needed.
- Jail officials may have delayed taking an inmate to the hospital.
- Jail officials may have failed to perform periodic wellness checks.
It can be hard to know where to begin if a loved one has died in custody. To make matters worse, jails are rarely transparent about how any inmate death took place. It is important that inmates and their families understand that they do have rights protected by the constitution. In particular, the family of any inmate who died in jail may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
