Investigation Underway After Female Inmate Died From Suspected Methamphetamine Overdose At LA County Jail
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 23, 2024) – A 38-year-old inmate has tragically died of a suspected drug overdose while staying at a Los Angeles County jail.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Wednesday. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was going through a medical emergency.
The inmate was taken to a Los Angeles hospital in order to receive care. Despite life-saving measures, the inmate died at the hospital.
Methamphetamine is a suspected factor in the death. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Drug overdoses remain a leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Methamphetamine has proven to be particularly dangerous. According to StatPearls, “In the United States, there were greater than 150000 emergency department visits for toxicity from methamphetamine in 2011 based on data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.” There are several signs that corrections officers should look for that could indicate a methamphetamine overdose.
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Hallucinations
- Seizures
- Confusion
All jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes harm brought on by a drug overdose. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. Jails should take several measures in order to prevent inmate overdose deaths.
- Jails should do everything in their power to prevent illicit drugs from entering the jail system.
- Jail medical professionals should be trained to spot the signs of drug overdose.
- Jails should be stocked with Narcan, which can be used to prevent an overdose.
Overdose deaths are nearly always preventable in a jail setting. They tend to occur when jail officials are not following safety protocols. Sadly, though, jails will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if an inmate dies in their care. This is why it is so important for inmates to seek legal advice as early as possible.
