(July 10, 2024) – A female inmate at the all-female Chowchilla State Prison has died from a heat-related illness, according to the California Coalition for Women Prisoners.

Madera County officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. Correctional officers noticed that a woman was suffering from a medical emergency.

The prisoner was transported to an outside medical facility, where she later died. It was later determined that her cause of death was a heat stroke.

It was 110 degrees in the area on the day that the incident took place.

Liability For Madera County Inmate Deaths

Extreme heat is linked to a number of inmate deaths every year. A large portion of these deaths take place in Texas, which doesn’t require that prisons have air conditioning. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, “from 2001 to 2019, there were 2,083 deaths in Texas prisons without air conditioning and 1,381 in prisons with air conditioning. The researchers found that, in prisons without air conditioning, a 1-degree increase above 85°F was linked with a 0.7% increase in the risk of death.” There are a number of signs an inmate may be suffering from a heat-related illness.

  • Heavy sweating
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Flushed skin

Jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes protecting inmates from heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. When a jail fails to take reasonable measures in order to protect inmates from extreme temperatures, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. Jails should take a number of measures in order to protect inmates from heat-related illnesses.

  • Jails should have climate-controlled facilities.
  • Inmates should have continuous access to hydration.
  • Inmates should have appropriate clothing.
  • Jail staff should be trained to spot the signs of heat illnesses.

Heat-related deaths are nearly always preventable. They tend to occur in jails where correctional officers are indifferent to the well-being of inmates. In many cases, inmates have been required to work in the heat. The family of any person who died due to a heat-related illness may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
