LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 24, 2024) – A male inmate has tragically died in a suspected fentanyl overdose while in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Saturday. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in medical distress.

Jail officials began life-saving measures in order to help the man. Sadly, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he later died at the jail.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Protestors have called for the LA based Men’s Central Jail to be closed. According to KTLA, “Protestors were seen rallying in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, calling for the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail to be shut down amid reports of inhumane conditions and dozens of inmate deaths.” Inmates at LA County jails have complained about a number of conditions.

  • Inmates have said that they’ve been denied proper medical care.
  • Numerous inmates have overdosed while in custody.
  • Inmates have been attacked by other inmates.

Jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. To that end, jails must provide medical care to all inmates. This should begin when they are first admitted. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to an inmate going through an overdose, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any inmate deaths.

  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
  • A civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Overdose deaths are nearly always preventable in a jail setting. They tend to take place due to the systemic failures within a jail, as opposed to the wrongful actions of a single person. It is crucial that inmates and their families understand that they do have rights. The family of any person who died in jail may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
