Homero Rosales Corona Fatally Shot by Kern County Deputies in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – Homero Rosales Corona, 42, was fatally shot by Kern County sheriff’s deputies on March 4, 2025, in southeast Bakersfield.

Incident Details

Deputies came into contact with Corona around 6:30 p.m. at Virginia Avenue Park, located at 2022 Virginia Avenue. Soon after their encounter with Corona, deputies fired their weapons, striking him and he was pronounced dead at the scene around 7:17 p.m. It is unknown why shots were fired, how many struck Corona, and if less-than-lethal methods were used first.

Incident Aftermath

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an investigation of the shooting is ongoing. Additionally, the Kern County District Attorney’s Office will assess the findings to determine whether the use of force complied with legal standards.

California law, including Assembly Bill 1506, requires the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate certain officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals. It is unclear at this time whether the DOJ will intervene in this case.

Legal Considerations in Officer-Involved Shootings

The use of deadly force by law enforcement is governed by California Penal Code § 835a, which states that officers may only use force when necessary and proportionate to the threat posed. The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution also protects individuals from unreasonable seizures, including excessive force. In cases where a shooting may have violated constitutional rights, families can pursue justice through 42 U.S. Code § 1983, which allows civil claims against government agencies for misconduct.
