police gunPomona, CA – A Pomona Police Department officer shot and wounded an individual on June 28, 2025, following an encounter in East Pomona.

Incident Overview

The incident occurred at roughly 6:10 p.m. on the 500 block of East Holt Avenue and Paloma Drive. Officers responded to a disturbance and encountered the individual, who was subsequently shot for unclear reasons.

The individual was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital in unknown condition. Responding deputies recovered a replica firearm at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office are leading the investigation.

Legal Oversight

Under California Penal Code § 835a, officers are only permitted to use lethal force when it’s necessary to neutralize a perceived imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. The presence of the replica firearm raises important legal questions about whether the officer’s actions were justified.

Legal Context Use of Force & Public Trust

Use-of-force incidents—even when non-fatal—remain a significant concern for communities and civil rights advocates. Data from the California DOJ’s OpenJustice database shows that officer-involved shootings in 2024 often involved individuals holding toy or replica weapons.
