CRESCENT CITY, CALIFORNIA (April 18, 2024) – A 35-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody while staying at the Pelican Bay State Prison in Delano.

Del Norte County officials are saying that the incident took place on April 2. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in some type of medical distress.

Very few details about what took place have been released. However, medical staff were not able to revive the inmate, and he was pronounced dead.

Jail officials have described the death as “unexpected.” A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Del Norte County Inmate Deaths

Inmate deaths are much more common than many people realize. According to Health Affairs, “About 0.62 deaths per 1,000 incarcerated people were illness-related deaths, 0.53 were suicides, and 0.15 were acute drug- or alcohol-related deaths. Accidents or homicides were less common (0.03 deaths each). The average daily population was close to 1,000 people per facility.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.

  • All inmates should get a thorough health screening before they are admitted.
  • Jails should thoroughly monitor inmates throughout their stay.
  • Jails should make sure that inmates get all of the medications that they need.

Inmate deaths can often be complex events. There is typically no single factor that may contribute to any inmate’s death. However, it is very common for inmate deaths to involve some amount of medical neglect. This could include instances where jails fail to provide inmates with timely care. In far too many situations, jails will wait until an inmate is in medical distress before they will bother intervening. Several steps should be taken after any inmate’s death.

  • The autopsy results should be reviewed.
  • The inmate’s medical profile should be understood.
  • Surveillance footage related to the death should be sought.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after an inmate’s death. Family members will often try to get answers, only to be met with silence by jail staff. This is why it is so important to seek the guidance of a skilled attorney after any inmate’s death. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
