STANISLAUS COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (December 27, 2024) – A 51-year-old inmate at the Sheriff’s Detention Center West in Stanislaus County has died in custody.

Stanislaus County officials are saying that the incident took place on Friday.

Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in serious medical distress.

Jail staff began lifesaving measures, including CPR. Despite those efforts, he later died.

His suspected cause of death was listed as fentanyl intoxication.

Legal Considerations for Stanislaus County Inmate Deaths

Drug overdoses remain one of the leading causes of inmate death in the United States. People recently released from jail are at the highest risk. According to OSHU, “People recently released from incarceration face a risk of opioid overdose 10 times greater than the general public, according to researchers at Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University and the Oregon Department of Corrections.” There are a number of signs an inmate may be overdosing on fentanyl.

  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Respiratory distress
  • Clammy skin
  • Limp body
  • Confusion or delirium

Depending on the facts of any case, a jail or private healthcare facility could face liability for the death of an inmate. Jails have a legal obligation to take reasonable steps in order to keep inmates safe. This includes protecting inmates from drug overdoses. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any overdose death in a jail.

  • Medical records related to the death should be sought.
  • Surveillance footage should be preserved.
  • An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Inmate deaths in jail are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where jails are overcrowded or understaffed. It is important for inmates and their families to understand that they do have rights. The family of any inmate who died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.
