Male Inmate Died From Suspected Cardiac Event After Being Placed In Custody In LA County Jail
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (November 21, 2024) – A 39-year-old male inmate has tragically died in custody while staying at a Los Angeles County jail.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Saturday. Correctional officers noticed that one inmate was in serious medical distress.
That inmate was taken to the Los Angeles General Medical Center in order to receive care. Sadly, though, their condition continued to decline while they were at the hospital.
They were later pronounced dead. Their suspected cause of death was listed as cardiac dysfunction.
Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Heart-related illnesses are responsible for many inmate deaths in the United States. According to the Bureau of Justice, “During 2001–19, cancer and heart disease accounted for more than 53% of all state prison deaths.” Part of the problem is that jails can be truly awful places to live, even in the best of circumstances. These environments can exasperate the pre-existing health conditions that inmates already have. Jails should take many different actions to prevent heart attacks.
- Inmates should have access to healthy foods.
- Inmates should be given time to exercise every day.
- Inmates should be given a health screening when they are first admitted.
- Inmates should be given the medications prescribed by healthcare providers.
Jails have a legal obligation to give all inmates access to medical care. For some inmates, they may only need occasional checkups. Other inmates may need round-the-clock care for chronic health conditions. If a jail fails to give an inmate the medical care that they require, this could lead to serious injury or even death. Despite this, there have been many reports of inmates in LA County jails being denied proper care.
- Inmates have been denied mental healthcare before committing suicide.
- Inmates were allowed to overdose in their cells while no one knew what was going on.
- Inmates have fallen after having seizures because they were denied medications.
It can be hard to know what to do after any inmate death. Jails are typically very slow to provide information, if they are transparent at all. They often claim that an inmate’s death was inevitable. But far too often this was not the case. Many of these deaths are preventable and may involve neglect on the part of several parties. The family of any inmate who died in custody may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
