Investigation Underway After Male Inmate Died From Heart Attack At Los Angeles County Jail
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 24, 2024) – A 39-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody at a Los Angeles County jail.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. Jail officials noticed that an inmate was in some type of medical distress.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. They were taken to Los Angeles General Medical Center.
But efforts to save them were not successful. The inmate was later pronounced dead due to a suspected heart attack.
Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Los Angeles County has a long and sordid history of poor treatment for inmates. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “The death toll in LA jails—the nation’s largest jail system—is driven by severe overcrowding, pervasive neglect and mistreatment, inadequate care inside jails, and a failure to offer robust alternatives to incarceration.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.
- All inmates should have a thorough health screening when they are first admitted.
- All inmates should receive periodic wellness checks.
- All inmates should receive the medication that they require.
Jails have a legal obligation to look after the inmates in their care and tend to their health needs. Inmates are not able to seek care the way that free persons are able to. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are many ways that a jail may have failed to properly care for an inmate.
- Jail officials may have failed to give an inmate medications.
- Jail officials may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.
- Jail officials may have not performed periodic wellness checks.
Inmate deaths are often highly complex. They tend to involve systemic failures within a jail system, as opposed to the wrongful actions of a single person. Jails will often claim that inmate deaths are “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths involve some amount of medical neglect. The family of any inmate who died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
