Investigation Underway After Male Inmate Died In Custody At Twin Towers Correctional Facility
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (November 24, 2024) – A male inmate has tragically died following a medical emergency while staying at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday. Correctional officers were performing wellness checks when they noticed an inmate in distress.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. Lifesaving measures were taken to help the inmate, but he later died.
His suspected cause of death was listed as Sepsis.
Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Thousands of inmates die every year in custody across the United States. Inmates are much more likely to die from sepsis, compared with non-inmates. According to one study in the NIH, “The study cohort included 8,568 cases of sepsis, of which 8,448 were noninmates and 120 were inmates. Overall mortality was 15.7%; for noninmates, the rate was 15.3%, and for inmates, 42.5%. The risk of death among inmates was 2.8 times that of noninmates.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent death from sepsis.
- Jail staff should be trained to identify signs of septic shock.
- Jails must have adequate medical personnel to meet the needs of all inmates.
- Jails should have infection control protocols.
- Jails should typically administer antibiotics if they have certain infections.
Jails are supposed to take care of all of the medical needs of all of their inmates. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important the circumstances of an inmate death are properly understood.
- Medical records related to the death should be collected.
- The actions of jail officials prior to the death should be understood.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
It can be hard to know where to begin after losing a love one in custody. Jails are typically not transparent about what took place. They may try to say that some death in their care was due to natural causes. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. This is why it is so important that all inmate deaths are properly investigated.
