Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Inmate deaths can happen for a variety of different reasons. According to Statista, “Suicide was the leading cause of death for local jail inmates in the United States in 2019, accounting for 355 deaths in that year. Heart disease killed a further 294 inmates in that same year, making it the second leading cause of death.” There are many other causes of inmate death.
- Homicide
- Drug overdose
- Drug withdrawal
- Chronic medical conditions
- Accidents
Jails have a legal obligation to provide all inmates in their care with reasonably adequate medical treatment. This must begin when an inmate is first admitted. All inmates should get a thorough health screening. The level of care that inmates should receive will depend on the severity of their healthcare problems. It is crucial that jails act quickly to prevent inmate deaths.
- Inmates should be given Narcan and CPR when they are showing signs of an overdose.
- Jail should take inmates to the hospital when they are showing signs of medical distress.
- Jails should work closely with healthcare providers.
Inmate deaths are rarely the result of the wrongful actions of a single person. They tend to be the result of systemic failures within jail systems. This could be due to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions within a jail. The family of any inmate who died in custody may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
