LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 11, 2024) – An inmate has tragically died from a suspected drug overdose while staying at the East Los Angeles Station.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. Correctional officers found an inmate in serious medical distress.

Jail staff began life-saving measures, and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. But those efforts were not successful, and he was later pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the death at the East Los Angeles Station remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Many inmates have died in Los Angeles County from drug overdoses. According to LAist, “Los Angeles County has been administering naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal drug, to people held in county jail much more often — a hundred or more times each year — since at least 2020, according to county data.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent overdose deaths.

  • Jail staff should be trained to recognize the signs of an overdose.
  • All inmates should be medically cleared before they are placed in jail.
  • Jail staff should periodically check on inmates to ensure that they are alright.

Jails have a legal obligation to provide inmates with adequate care for all of their medical conditions. This includes situations where an inmate is going through an overdose. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are several ways that a jail may have failed to adequately care for an inmate.

  • A jail may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.
  • A jail may have failed to give an inmate nalaxone, which can be used to reverse an overdose.
  • A jail may have failed to provide an inmate with medical detoxification.

Inmate deaths are often highly preventable. This is particularly true when an inmate dies from an overdose. It is important that inmates and their families understand that they do have rights. The family of any inmate that died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
