Investigation Underway After 40-Year-Old Man Died In Custody At Cois M Byrd Detention Center
RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (December 11, 2024) – A 40-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody at the Cois M Byrd Detention Center in Riverside County.
Riverside County officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:06 p.m. on Friday. Officers found an inmate unresponsive in their jail cell.
Jail staff began life-saving measures in order to save the man. But those efforts were not successful, and he was ultimately pronounced dead.
Foul play is not a suspected factor in the death. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Legal Considerations for Riverside County Inmate Deaths
Inmate deaths remain all too common across California. Riverside County has a particularly poor track record. According to the New York Times, “The surge of 19 deaths in 2022 made Riverside’s rate the second-highest in the state, behind Kern County, which had a much smaller jail population. Among the nation’s 15 largest jail systems, Riverside was the second-most deadly, with a rate more than twice that of Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas.” Inmates have allegedly been subjected to all forms of mistreatment.
- Inmates have reported being subjected to excessive force.
- Inmates have reported being attacked by other inmates.
- Inmates have reported being denied critical medical care.
When the state deprives someone of their freedom through incarceration, certain constitutional standards will apply. Among other things, the Supreme Court of the United States has held that inmates have a constitutional right to receive reasonably adequate care. Failing to give inmates adequate care is considered a form of cruel and unusual punishment and therefore unconstitutional. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any inmate death.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- The history of death at the jail should be understood.
- An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
Jails are often quick to say that any inmate death in their care was due to natural factors. But the truth of the matter is that these claims can often be highly misleading. Many of these supposed natural deaths involve some amount of medical neglect.
This may include instances where inmates were denied proper medical care for significant periods of time. The family of any person who died in custody may have legal recourse through a wrongful death.
