RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIFORNIA (October 6, 2024) – A male inmate has tragically died in custody at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

San Bernardino County officials are saying that the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was unresponsive.

Despite life-saving measures, the inmate was pronounced dead. No signs of foul play were detected. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations For San Bernardino County Inmate Deaths

Inmate deaths remain very common across California and the United States. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “Almost 87% of the 65,027 state prisoners and 89% of the 7,125 federal prisoners who died in custody from 2001 to 2019 died of illness. The number of deaths in state prisons due to drug or alcohol intoxication increased from 35 in 2001 to 253 in 2019.” There are a number of common causes of inmate deaths.

  • Drug intoxication
  • Excessive force
  • Suicide
  • Cancer
  • Heart attacks

Jails have a legal obligation to provide inmates with reasonably adequate care for all of their medical conditions. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. For example, jail officials may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner when they were in medical distress. Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.

  • Jails should be stocked with Narcan in order to prevent overdoses.
  • Jails should be staffed by well-trained officials.
  • Jails should work closely with medical providers.

Many inmate deaths are completely preventable. They tend to be the result of systemic failures within any jail system rather than the misconduct of a single person. It is crucial that evidence is properly preserved after any inmate death. The family of any inmate that died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
