FRENCH CAMP, CALIFORNIA (December 13, 2024) – A 40-year-old man has tragically died in custody at the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.
San Joaquin County Jail officials are saying that the incident took place around 1:00 p.m. on September 11. Jail staff are saying that the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell in Intake 1.
Medical staff began life-saving measures, which were taken over by paramedics. He was transported to a hospital in an ambulance.
He was given additional treatment in the emergency room at the hospital. But these efforts were not enough to save him.
He was later pronounced dead.
Legal Considerations for San Joaquin County Inmate Deaths
Inmate deaths remain very common across California. What’s particularly disturbing is that many of these deaths involve people who are very young. A number of inmates in their 30’s and 40’s have died. A number of these deaths have involved drug overdoses or attacks at the hands of other inmates. Several other factors could contribute to a death.
- Poor mental healthcare treatment
- Overcrowding
- Staffing shortages
- A lack of resources
Jails have a legal obligation to take certain steps to prevent inmate deaths and other foreseeable sources of harm. This should include performing periodic wellness checks on all inmates. This should typically be done multiple times every hour. Several types of mistakes could contribute to an inmate death.
- A jail may have failed to provide an inmate with medication.
- A jail may have failed to provide medical detoxification.
- A jail may have given an inmate too much pain medication.
The medical treatment that inmates get is rarely on par with what they would receive outside of a jail setting. In fact, inmates consistently die at higher rates from infections and other illnesses than the general public. The family of any person who died in a jail setting may be able to seek some level of justice through a wrongful death claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
