Rosemead — Jason Thai was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy on October 22.2025, after he allegedly exited a home armed with a weapon in Rosemead.
Incident Details
Deputies responded to a call reporting a man suffering from a mental illness around the early evening to a residence on the 3000 block of Sullivan Avenue near Garvey Avenue. Deputies said Thai was making threats to harm himself, his family members, and responding personnel. The Mental Evaluation Team was called and learned Thai had a firearm, and the Special Enforcement Bureau was summoned. When Thai emerged from the home holding a weapon, a deputy discharged his firearm, fatally wounding him at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau has taken over the investigation, with support from the District Attorney’s Office.
Legal Context & Use-of-Force Review
- Under California Penal Code § 835a, a peace officer is justified in using deadly force only when the officer reasonably believes it’s necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily injury.
- As this is an officer-involved shooting resulting in death, it triggers required oversight including internal review, possible use of force board review, and likely independent investigation by the District Attorney’s office.
- If it becomes evident the deputy’s perception of the threat was unreasonable, or de-escalation options were not utilized, the incident may give rise to civil claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 for violation of constitutional rights.
