Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested for Allegedly Sexually Assaulting Minor Girl

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (November 29, 2024) – A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the alleged incident took place in June 2020. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy is accused of sexually assaulting the girl at his home in Cudahy.

He is charged with a single count of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14. According to court records, he is free on a $100,000 bond.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Sexual Assaults

Sexual assaults that involve law enforcement are unfortunately all too common. According to one study, “Sexual misconduct was the second most common form of misconduct reported throughout 2010 with 618 officers involved in sexual misconduct complaints during that period, 354 of which were involved in complaints that involved forcible non-consensual sexual activity such as sexual assault or sexual battery.” Slightly more than half of all of the victims in the study were minors. Police departments should take a number of measures in order to prevent sexual assaults.

  • All police officers should undergo a thorough background check.
  • Police departments should have clear policies with respect to sexual abuse and harassment.
  • Police departments should thoroughly investigate all instances of misconduct.

Depending on the facts of any case, a police department could be liable if their officer sexually abuses someone. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Much of the sexual abuse involving law enforcement takes place under the color of law. In other words, officers may act as though their misconduct served some legitimate purpose. It is important that certain steps are taken after any instance of sexual abuse involving an officer.

  • A police report should be created.
  • Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Sexual abuse involving police officers is often highly preventable. Part of the problem is that many police departments fail to investigate allegations of misconduct. Indeed, by the time any officer is arrested for abuse, there were often dozens of red flags that were missed. Any person that is sexually abused by a police officer may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
