LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (January 15, 2025) – A 23-year-old man has tragically died while in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday, January 14. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in some type of distress in his cell.

Jail and medical staff entered the cell in order to help the inmate. Despite lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at the jail.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Los Angeles County has one of the highest instances of inmate deaths in all of California. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “The death toll in LA jails—the nation’s largest jail system—is driven by severe overcrowding, pervasive neglect and mistreatment, inadequate care inside jails, and a failure to offer robust alternatives to incarceration.” Men’s Central Jail has a particularly poor track record.

  • There are reports of excessive force by correctional officers.
  • There are reports of inmates being assaulted by other inmates.
  • There are reports of numerous inmates overdosing in the jail.

All inmates have a constitutional right to receive adequate care for all of their medical conditions. This must begin when they are first placed in custody. When an inmate is having a serious medical condition, they must be given prompt care. But far too often this does not happen. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are a number of ways that a jail may have contributed to an inmate’s death.

  • Correctional officers may have used excessive force on an inmate.
  • Correctional officers may not have carefully monitored an inmate at risk of self-harm.
  • Correctional officers may not have given an inmate the medication that they needed.

Jail deaths are often highly preventable. This is particularly true when an inmate death is due to an overdose. Jails are often quick to claim that many of the deaths in their care were “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many supposedly natural inmate deaths involve medical neglect. The family of any inmate who dies in custody may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
