SOLEDAD, CALIFORNIA (April 27, 2024) – A 29-year-old inmate has died in custody at the Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad.

Monterey County officials are saying that the incident took place on March 3. Jail officials noticed that an inmate was in need of medical aid.

Jail staff began life-saving measures in order to help the inmate. But those efforts were not successful.

The 29-year-old inmate was later pronounced dead on prison grounds. A full investigation into the cause of the death remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Monterey County Inmate Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody each year in the United States. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics,“More than 91% of deaths in prisons in 2019 occurred in facilities operated by states or in private prison facilities contracted to state departments of corrections (DOCs), while almost 9% occurred in federally operated prison facilities.” A number of environmental factors in jails can contribute to inmate deaths.

  • Overcrowding
  • Understating
  • Unsanitary living conditions
  • A lack of air conditioning

The Supreme Court of the United States has held that all inmates must receive adequate care for their medical conditions. This must start when an inmate is first admitted. They should get a thorough health screening. If an inmate makes a medical complaint, they should be evaluated by a trained professional. It is important that all relevant evidence be preserved after any inmate’s death.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • The inmate’s medical records should be collected.
  • The actions of correctional officers leading up to the death should be understood.

Jails are supposed to have a holistic approach when it comes to keeping inmates healthy. This includes allowing inmates to exercise and providing them with healthy food. But in far too many situations, this does not take place. Jail officials will only intervene to help inmates after they are in medical distress.
