Investigation Underway After Inmate Died Following Medical Emergency At Los Angeles County Jail

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (March 17, 2024) – A 37-year-old inmate tragically died after some type of medical issue while they were staying at a Los Angeles County jail.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was in some type of medical distress.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. He was taken to the Los Angeles General Medical Center in order to receive care.

Despite life-saving efforts, the inmate died at the hospital. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Los Angeles County has a very poor reputation with respect to the care that inmates get. According to the Vera Institute, “Overcrowded facilities are the most significant single factor driving jail deaths in Los Angeles. The jail system has operated as high as 16.7 percent over capacity since the start of last year. This means that not only are the facilities physically crowded, but resources are also being stretched beyond their breaking point.” There are many different causes of inmate death.

  • Homicide
  • Suicide
  • Medical neglect
  • Heart attacks
  • Cancer

The United States Constitution prohibits jails from utilizing cruel and unusual forms of punishment. To that end, jails cannot deprive inmates of adequate medical care. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any in-custody death.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
  • The circumstances leading up to the death should be understood.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Los Angeles County jails are often quick to claim that inmate deaths in their care are “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths listed as “natural” involve some amount of neglect. This could include instances where jail officials fail to get inmates to the hospital in a timely manner. The family of any person who died in a Los Angeles County jail may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
