LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (July 16, 2024) – A 44-year-old inmate has tragically died while in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was injured in some type of “accident.”

Medical staff began life-saving measures, but those efforts were not successful. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody every year in the United States. Many of these people were never even formally convicted of the crime for which they were being held. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “A total of 4,234 persons died in state and federal prisons in 2019, a 6.6% decrease from the 4,515 deaths in 2018 reported to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program) data collection.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.

  • Inmates should have a thorough health screening when they are first admitted.
  • Inmates should be closely monitored shortly after being admitted.
  • Correctional officers should perform periodic wellness checks on inmates.

Jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. To that end, inmates must also get medical care for all of their health conditions. If a jail fails to provide inmates with reasonably adequate care, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are several factors that contribute to an inmate’s death.

  • Overcrowding
  • Understaffing
  • Unsafe jail conditions
  • Inmate violence

Jails can be unsafe places, even in the best of circumstances. This is particularly true when it comes to Los Angeles County jails. These institutions have a history of treating inmates poorly. Sadly, jails will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility. The family of any person who died in a LA County jail may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
