SANTA RITA, CALIFORNIA (October 25, 2024) – A 30-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody at a jail in Santa Rita.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Department officials are saying that the incident took place around 12:38 p.m. on Monday. Correctional officers found the inmate unresponsive in his jail cell.

Medical staff entered the cell and began life-saving measures. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead roughly 25 minutes after being found unresponsive.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations For Alameda County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody every year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “A total of 4,234 persons died in state and federal prisons in 2019, a 6.6% decrease from the 4,515 deaths in 2018 reported to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program) data collection.” There are a number of common causes of inmate death.

  • Drug overdoses
  • Suicides
  • Homicides
  • Excessive force
  • Heart attacks

Drug overdoses remain one of the leading causes of inmate deaths. In many cases, inmates may smuggle illicit substances into the jail. In other cases, inmates may have taken drugs prior to being admitted into the jail. Jails should take a number of steps in order to prevent overdoses in their care.

  • Jails should be stocked with Narcan.
  • Jails should have medical detox programs.
  • Jail staff should be trained to spot the signs of an overdose.

When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the needs of an inmate going through an overdose, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. Sadly, though, jails will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if someone in their care died. The family of any inmate that died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
