LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 17, 2024) – An inmate at the North County Correctional Facility has tragically died in a suspected homicide at the jail.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Friday. An inmate at the jail was attacked by at least one more inmate.

Correctional officers began helping the inmate, who was suffering from blunt force injuries. Despite life-saving measures, he died in jail.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody every year in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, “A total of 4,234 persons died in state and federal prisons in 2019, a 6.6% decrease from the 4,515 deaths in 2018 reported to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program) data collection.” There are a number of common causes of inmate death.

  • Suicide
  • Homicide
  • Drug overdoses
  • Cancer

Jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes attacks at the hands of other inmates. When a jail fails to take reasonable measures to protect inmates, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any inmate death.

  • Medical records related to the death should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Jails are often quick to label inmate deaths as “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths listed as natural involve some amount of medical neglect. The family of any person that died in custody may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
