LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (February 20, 2025) – A 28-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody at the East Los Angeles Station jail.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 3:00 PM on Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was in serious distress inside of his jail cell.

Jail staff and medical staff entered the cell in order to help the man. He was given CPR and other life-saving measures. But these efforts proved to be ineffective.

He was later pronounced dead at the East Los Angeles Station. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Drug overdoses remain one of the leading causes of inmate death in California and the United States. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “Just as punitive responses to drug use have driven incarceration, substantial evidence suggests that incarceration is associated with increased risk for overdose death. Research has confirmed that overdose is the leading cause of death among people recently released from prisons, as well as the third leading cause of deaths in custody in U.S. jails.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent overdose deaths.

  • Jail staff should be trained to recognize the signs of an overdose.
  • Jails should take reasonable measures in order to prevent illicit substances from entering inside.
  • Jails should be stocked with Narcan, which can be used to reverse the effects of an overdose.
  • Jails should perform periodic wellness checks on the inmates in their care.

Jails have a legal obligation to provide all inmates in their care adequate medical treatment. This includes providing inmates care when they are going through a drug overdose. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important that evidence is properly collected after any inmate death.

  • Autopsy results should be reviewed.
  • An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
  • The actions of jail officials leading up to the death should be understood.
  • The history of similar deaths at the jail in question should be understood.

Inmate deaths due to drug overdoses are often highly preventable. They nearly always involve some amount of neglect on the part of jail officials. In particular, Los Angeles County jails are notorious for how many drugs are allowed to enter inside. There have been two mass overdose instances at Los Angeles County jails just within the past months. The family of any person who died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
