LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (December 11, 2024) – A man has tragically died in an East Los Angeles police shooting involving a Los Angeles Police Department.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 12:44 a.m. on Tuesday.  Officers drove to Olympic Boulevard after getting a call about a man who allegedly had a weapon.

When police encountered the man, he allegedly produced the weapon and was shot by a police officer. Officers rendered medical aid until the paramedics arrived.

He was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations For Los Angeles Police Department Shootings

Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed every year during encounters with police. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “About 195 people die each year from interactions with California law enforcement. Gunshots are by far the most common cause of death: nearly 250 people are shot by police each year.” Police officers should take a number of measures in order to avoid harming suspects.

  • Police officers should do their best to de-escalate tense situations.
  • Police officers should operate off of a use-of-force continuum.
  • Police officers should typically use less-lethal options first before deploying their firearms.

All police officers have  a legal obligation to use the least amount of force needed for any given situation. A police department could be liable for the excessive force of their officers. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. There are a number of different situations that could constitute excessive force.

  • Police officers may have shot a suspect who was merely attempting to flee.
  • Police officers may have hit a suspect who was already restrained.
  • Police officers may have caused a suspect to experience positional asphyxia.

Police shootings are often highly preventable. They tend to involve officers who are either unwilling or unable to de-escalate encounters. Sadly, though, police departments will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their officers kill someone. This is why it is so important for victims of police brutality to seek legal guidance as early as possible.
