Orange County Officials Investigating Fullerton Police Shooting Along The East Imperial Highway

pexels-rdne-stock-project-6519848(June 17, 2024) – A man has tragically died in a Fullerton police shooting along the 200 block of East Imperial Highway.

Orange County officials are saying that the incident took place around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday. The police were called after getting reports about a man allegedly armed with a knife.

Officers arrived at the scene and encountered the suspect. They told the suspect to drop his weapon several times before he allegedly approached them with a weapon.

Officers opened fire and struck the suspect with gunfire. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Liability For Orange County Police Shootings

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in California police shootings every year. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “About 195 people die each year from interactions with California law enforcement. Gunshots are by far the most common cause of death: nearly 250 people are shot by police each year.” Police departments should take a number of actions to help reduce fatal shootings.

  • Police departments should have clear use-of-force policies.
  • Police officers should be equipped with tasers and other less-lethal options.
  • Police departments should train their officers on how to de-escalate encounters.

Lethal force should always be used as an absolute measure of last resort. Pursuant to California Penal Code 835(a), “the authority to use physical force, conferred on peace officers by this section, is a serious responsibility that shall be exercised judiciously and with respect for human rights and dignity and for the sanctity of every human life.” Victims of police brutality tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Head injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Organ damage
  • Gunshot wounds
  • Death

Many police shootings are actually preventable. They tend to involve instances where officers are unwilling or unable to de-escalate encounters. Unfortunately, though, police departments will do everything in their power to deny responsibility if they kill a suspect. This is why it is so important to have any police shooting thoroughly investigated by a skilled civil rights attorney.
