LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 6, 2024) – A man has died in a South Los Angeles police shooting after a vehicle pursuit that ended at 66th Street and Flower Street.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:25 a.m. on Saturday. LAPD officials followed a suspect until the chase came to an end.

The suspect was eventually shot by a plain clothed police officer in an unmarked vehicle. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles Police Department Shootings

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in police shootings each year. Many of these shootings involved officers who have been charged with various forms of misconduct. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “Of the over 78,000 law enforcement officers in California, about 80 are arrested each year; assault is the most common reason for arrest. Data on arrested officers do not capture the full range of police misconduct.” Several factors can influence the likelihood of a police shooting.

  • Police shootings are much more likely to involve suspects who are suffering from an untreated mental illness.
  • Police shootings are more likely to occur when officers are poorly trained.
  • Police shootings are more likely to occur in high-crime areas.

Police officers are allowed to take a number of measures in order to defend themselves and the public. But at no point are they allowed to use excessive force. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Victims of police shootings tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Organ damage
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • PTSD
  • Death

Police shootings are often highly preventable. They tend to involve officers who are either unwilling or unable to de-escalate encounters. Sadly, though, police departments will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if any person is killed by one of their officers. The family of any person who died in a police shooting may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
