Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday morning. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was having some type of medical emergency.
Jail staff and nurses began life-saving measures in order to help the victim. Despite those efforts, he was not able to be revived.
A full investigation into the death remains ongoing at this time.
Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Thousands of inmates die from preventable medical conditions every year in the United States. According to The Guardian, “Institutional failures and policy violations by the US Bureau of Prisons (BoP) have contributed to hundreds of preventable deaths of incarcerated people in recent years, according to a federal watchdog report released on Thursday.” Several factors could contribute to an inmate’s death.
- Inmate deaths are more likely to take place when jails are overcrowded.
- Inmate deaths are more likely when jails fail to follow safety protocols.
- Inmate deaths are more likely when jails fail to properly monitor inmates at risk of harm.
Jails have a legal obligation to take care of the medical needs of all of the inmates in their care. This will be different for every inmate. Some inmates may have a history of epilepsy. This leaves them vulnerable to being seriously injured from falls. When an inmate has a serious medical need, jails are constitutionally required to provide them with adequate care. There are several ways that a jail may have failed to properly take care of an inmate.
- A jail may not have gotten an inmate the medication that they needed.
- A jail may have failed to protect an inmate at risk of self-harm.
- A jail may not have helped an inmate who was going through a drug overdose.
Los Angeles County jails have an extremely poor track record when it comes to properly taking care of inmates. For starters, they often fail to prevent illicit drugs from entering inside. It is important that inmates and their families understand that they do have rights. In particular, the family of an inmate who died in custody may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
