Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Investigating Death of Inmate At Twin Towers Correctional Facility
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 13, 2024) – A 61-year-old inmate has tragically died following a medical emergency at the Twin Tower’s Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in serious medical distress.
Jail medical staff began life-saving measures, but these efforts were not successful. The inmate was later pronounced dead at the jail.
Authorities suspect that the cause of death was cardiovascular in nature.
Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Cardiovascular illnesses remain a leading cause of inmate death in the United States. According to the Journal of American Cardiology, “Currently, 2.2 million individuals are incarcerated and more than 11 million have been released from U.S. correctional facilities. Individuals with a history of incarceration are more likely to be of racial and ethnic minority populations, poor, and have higher rates of cardiovascular risk factors, especially smoking and hypertension.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.
- All inmates must undergo a thorough medical evaluation.
- Jails should be stocked with Narcan, which can be used to prevent an overdose.
- Jails should be staffed with an adequate number of well-trained medical professionals.
All jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from foreseeable sources of harm. This includes taking care of their health needs. Inmates are not able to seek care the way that free persons are able to. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. A jail may have contributed to an inmate’s death in any number of different ways.
- Jail staff may not have taken an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.
- Jails may not have provided prompt medical care to an inmate in distress.
- Jails may not have medically cleared an inmate before placing them in a cell.
Inmate deaths are often highly preventable. They tend to involve systemic failures within a jail, as opposed to the poor decisions of a single person. Sadly, though, jails will often fight hard to deny liability when any inmate dies in their care. The family of any inmate that died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
