LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (December 1, 2024) – A 42-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody while staying at the Lancaster Station Jail in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was in serious medical distress.

Jail staff and nurses were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. They were taken to the jail infirmary in order to receive additional care.

But efforts to save the inmate were not successful.

Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Drug overdoses are a major cause of inmate death across Los Angeles. Many of these involved methamphetamine. According to the National Institutes of Health, “Overdose deaths involving methamphetamine nearly tripled from 2015 to 2019 among people ages 18-64 in the United States, according to a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent overdose deaths.

  • Jails should be trained to recognize the signs of an overdose.
  • Jails should be stocked with Narcan, which can be used to reverse the effects of an overdose.
  • Jails should do everything in their power to prevent illicit drugs from entering in the first place.

Jails have a legal obligation to take reasonable measures in order to prevent inmate deaths. This includes taking steps to prevent inmates from overdosing in their care. This begins when an inmate is first admitted. They should get a health screening and be evaluated for any overdose risk. A jail may have made a number of mistakes in failing to properly care for an inmate who died of an overdose.

  • Jails may not have been stocked with Narcan.
  • Jail staff may not have performed periodic wellness checks.
  • Jail staff may have ignored signs an inmate was going through an overdose.

Inmate deaths are often highly preventable, especially when they are due to an overdose. These incidents may happen because jail officials are simply indifferent to the well-being of inmates in their care. In many situations, jails fail to adequately process inmates who later die in custody. The family of any inmate who died in custody may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
