Students Listed Among Those Injured In Temecula School Bus Accident on Butterfield Stage Road by Pauba Road

TEMECULA, CALIFORNIA (November 20, 2023) – Several people were injured in a Temecula school bus accident with a drunk driver by Butterfield Stage Road and Pauba Road.

Riverside County officials are saying that the accident took place around 3:25 p.m. on Friday. A woman driving a 2017 Toyota Corolla collided with a Temecula Valley Unified School District, Bluebird school bus.

The force of the impact caused the bus driver to lose control and enter southbound lanes of traffic. A 39-year-old woman driving a Toyota Highlander was subsequently hit by the school bus.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims. Two children in the school bus were taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment.

The driver of the Highlander was taken to the Temecula Valley Hospital. Police have charged the driver of the Corolla with DUI.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Temecula School Bus Accidents

Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “In 2020, 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, accounting for 30% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. This was a 14.3% increase compared to the number of crash deaths involving alcohol-impaired drivers in 2019.” There are a number of substances besides alcohol that could potentially intoxicate a driver.

  • Synthetic drugs such as fentanyl can intoxicate drivers.
  • Prescription medications can impair drivers.
  • Over-the-counter medications such as sleep aids can also cause problems.

Bus drivers are considered common carriers and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. According to the Judicial Council of California Civil Jury Instructions, “Common carriers must carry passengers [or property] safely. Common carriers must use the highest care and the vigilance of a very cautious person. They must do all that human care, vigilance, and foresight reasonably can do under the circumstances to avoid harm to passengers [or property].” Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Amputations
  • Concussions
  • PTSD

There could be multiple liable parties for any school bus accident. This is why it is so important that all relevant evidence is properly preserved. For example, a driver may overreact after an initial collision which caused them to lose control. The FMCSA requires buses that can carry 16 or more passengers to have at least $5 million worth of liability coverage. Any person that is injured in a school bus accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
