Man Critically Injured In North Hollywood, Los Angeles Police Shooting By Super 8 Motel Near Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Saticoy Street
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA (January 24, 2024) – A man was critically injured in North Hollywood after being shot by LAPD officers just outside a Super 8 motel.
Los Angeles Police Department officers are saying that the incident took place around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Police were called to the area after getting reports about a man wielding a hatchet.
Officers said that they initially tried to subdue the man with less lethal measures including tasers and bean bag rounds. Those measures proved to be ineffective. Officers claim that the man approached them before they opened fire.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the man. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For North Hollywood Police Shootings
Police shootings have become all too common across Los Angeles. A large portion of the people that are injured were suffering from an untreated mental illness. According to the Treatment Advocacy Center, “The risk of being killed while being approached or stopped by law enforcement in the community is 16 times higher for individuals with untreated serious mental illness than for other civilians.” There are a number of steps that police departments should take in order to avoid shooting mentally ill suspects.
- Police officers should receive comprehensive training on recognizing and understanding mental illness.
- Police departments should have Crisis Intervention Teams that specifically deal with people with mental health problems.
- Police officers should use less lethal measures first before resorting to their firearms.
Police officers have a great deal of discretion when it comes to the execution of their duties. But at no point are officers permitted to use excessive force. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. It is important that all evidence related to a police shooting is properly preserved.
- Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
- All body camera footage from the officers involved should be reviewed.
- Medical records related to the incident should be sought.
Police shootings are often highly preventable. They are much more likely to happen when officers are poorly trained or otherwise not following police protocol. Sadly, though, police departments will often do everything that they can to deny responsibility if their officers are involved in a police shooting.
