Man Killed in Sacramento Police Shooting After Vehicle Pursuit from Elk Grove
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (February 7, 2025) – A man has died in a Sacramento police shooting after a vehicle pursuit that began in Elk Grove.
Sacramento officials are saying that the incident took place around 11:45 PM on Saturday. Elk Grove police officials attempted to stop a Ford Explorer without a license plate.
The driver of that vehicle allegedly refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit through Sacramento County. At one point, the suspect was northbound on Highway 99 before he allegedly exited onto Florin Road.
Officers used their patrol vehicle to ram the suspect’s vehicle. At least two officers fired their weapons and hit the suspect.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the man. But he was later pronounced dead. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Legal Considerations for Sacramento County Police Shootings
California has one of the highest rates of police shootings. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “In about 80 percent of encounters resulting in death or a gunshot wound, the civilian was armed with a weapon, underscoring the risky environments officers face. However, when we also consider civilians who sustained other serious injuries, 56 percent were unarmed.” Police officers should take a number of measures in order to prevent fatal shootings.
- Police officers should do their best to de-escalate encounters.
- Police officers should resort to less lethal options in many situations.
- Police officers should use a great deal of care around suspects in the midst of a mental health crisis.
The ability to use lethal force is one of the most consequential powers that police officers hold. It should be used with a great deal of discretion. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. There are a number of situations where shooting a suspect could be considered excessive force.
- A suspect may not have posed a danger to anyone.
- A suspect may have been merely attempting to flee.
- A suspect may have already been restrained or subdued.
Police departments will rarely accept accountability for the wrongful actions of their officers. When police departments investigate themselves, they will typically come to the conclusion that their officers didn’t do anything wrong. This is why it is so important to have an outside agent investigate a fatal police shooting. The family of any person who died in a police shooting may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
