Acute Methamphetamine Overdose Listed As Cause of Death for Man at Stanislaus County Jail
STANISLAUS COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (December 20, 2024) – A 45-year-old inmate has tragically died while awaiting arraignment at a Stanislaus County Jail.
Stanislaus County officials are saying that the incident took place on Sunday. The inmate was in the receive and release area when they went into medical distress.
Jail staff began life-saving measures, which were taken over by paramedics. Despite those efforts, the inmate later died.
The man’s cause of death was listed as acute methamphetamine poisoning.
Legal Considerations for Inmate Overdose Deaths
Drug overdoses remain one of the leading causes of inmate death in the United States. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “Just as punitive responses to drug use have driven incarceration, substantial evidence suggests that incarceration is associated with increased risk for overdose death. Research has confirmed that overdose is the leading cause of death among people recently released from prisons, as well as the third leading cause of deaths in custody in U.S. jails.” There are a number of symptoms commonly associated with a methamphetamine overdose.
- Homicide
- Suicide
- Drug overdoses
- Drug withdrawal
Jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from harm. This includes the harm brought on by a drug overdose. Inmates are at a much greater risk of dying from an overdose, especially after they are first admitted. Medical staff inside a jail should be trained to recognize the signs that an inmate is going through an overdose, but this does not always happen. The introduction of drugs like fentanyl has been particularly devastating for inmates and the general population. Several steps should be taken after any overdose death in a jail.
- The source of the drugs responsible for the overdose should be determined.
- Autopsy results should be reviewed.
- An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.
Drug overdoses are nearly always preventable in a jail setting. They tend to involve situations where jails fail to keep illicit substances out. It is also possible that medical staff give inmates too much opioid medication. Sadly, though, jails will virtually never take responsibility when an inmate in their care dies. This is why it is so important that inmate deaths are properly investigated by a skilled attorney.
