Roman Huerta Dies in Custody After Being Tased
Victorville, CA– The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has initiated an investigation following the in-custody death of Roman Huerta, a 28-year-old transient in Victorville. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, February 24, 2025.
Incident Overview
At approximately 12:41 a.m., a deputy from the Victorville Sheriff’s Station responded to a disturbance at the Chevron station located at 12905 Hesperia Road. Upon arrival, the deputy encountered Roman Huerta, who was reportedly involved in a battery investigation, appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance, and was causing a disturbance inside the store.
During the interaction, Huerta allegedly pushed the deputy and fled on foot. The deputy pursued and deployed a taser to subdue him. Huerta was transported to Victor Valley Global Medical Center at 15248 11th Street for a pre-booking medical clearance. Subsequently, Huerta became unresponsive, and despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
Legal and Civil Rights Considerations
In-custody deaths often prompt discussions about law enforcement practices and detainee rights. Under California law, individuals in custody are entitled to appropriate medical care and humane treatment. The Bane Act (California Civil Code § 52.1) offers legal recourse for individuals whose rights have been interfered with through coercion or excessive force.
If investigations reveal that Huerta’s rights were violated, his family may have grounds to pursue legal action to seek justice and accountability.
