Details of the Shooting

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to reports of a suspicious person in the neighborhood. Investigation Underway

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division is currently handling the case. Investigators have not specified what the man was holding at the time of the shooting. It remains unclear whether he had any weapons.

The California Department of Justice may also review the incident in accordance with Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), which mandates state-level investigations into police shootings involving unarmed civilians.

Use of Force and Public Concern

Fatal encounters involving law enforcement continue to raise concerns over de-escalation tactics and use-of-force policies. Under California Penal Code § 835a, law enforcement officers are authorized to use deadly force when they reasonably believe it is necessary to defend themselves or others from imminent harm. However, advocates argue that more emphasis should be placed on non-lethal alternatives, particularly when dealing with individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has yet to release body camera footage of the incident, which could provide additional clarity on what transpired.
