San Diego, CA – A San Diego State University police officer has been arrested for possession of child pornography, according to the university’s chief of police. SDSU’s Police Chief Gregory Murphy confirmed the officer’s arrest on March 18, 2025.
Incident Overview
According to reports, Homeland Security Investigations’ cyber crime unit led an investigation that was the catalyst for the arrest. This would lead to the officer’s arrest on March 13, 2025. On March 14, 2025, the officer was charged with possession of child pornography.
As of now the officer’s name, rank, and tenure with the university’s police department have yet to be revealed. The UPD issued a statement condemning exploitation and abuse, and the department has since moved to fire the officer.
Legal Implications and Public Trust
Child pornography is a very serious offense. Possession and distribution of it is in violation of California Penal Code 311. That this incident happened with a police officer stationed at a university is especially troubling, as it now casts doubt among students about safety and trust while on campus.
