LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 15, 2024) – A man has tragically died following a medical emergency at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in medical distress.

They were taken to a local hospital, where their condition deteriorated. Despite life-saving measures, they died at the prison.

The LA Sheriff’s Department listed sepsis as a cause of death.

Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody each year. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “Almost 87% of the 65,027 state prisoners and 89% of the 7,125 federal prisoners who died in custody from 2001 to 2019 died of illness.” Many of the inmates who died were never even convicted of the crimes that they were being held on. Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.

  • All inmates should get a thorough health screening.
  • Jail staff should be trained to spot when an inmate is in a medical emergency.
  • Jails should work closely with healthcare companies.

All jails have a legal obligation to provide inmates with reasonably adequate care. This includes care for chronic health conditions and acute conditions that may only become present during incarceration. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are a number of ways that a jail may have failed to properly care for an inmate at risk from sepsis.

  • Jail officials or medical staff may have failed to recognize symptoms.
  • Jail officials may have delayed getting inmates medical attention.
  • Jail officials may not have properly monitored an inmate who had sepsis.
  • Jail officials may have failed to provide antibiotics or other needed medications.

Jails are often quick to claim that inmate deaths are “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths listed as natural involve some amount of medical neglect. This is why it is so important that there is a thorough investigation after any inmate death. The family of any inmate that died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
