A full investigation into the attack remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Riverside County Inmate Deaths

A number of jails within Riverside County have come under scrutiny following a string of inmate deaths. Many have involved attacks by other inmates. According to the Desert Sun, “Three federal lawsuits were filed against the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in as many days on behalf of the survivors of three men who died in the county’s jails.  One of the men overdosed and two were killed by fellow inmates, according to the lawsuits and the sheriff’s department.” A number of allegations were made with respect to Riverside County jails.

  • Numerous lawsuits have claimed that inmates have not received adequate medical care.
  • Numerous lawsuits have claimed that jails in Riverside County are overcrowded, leading to poor living conditions.
  • Numerous lawsuits have claimed that inmates have been denied adequate mental healthcare.

All jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm.  This includes protecting inmates from violence. When a jail has specific knowledge of particular threats, they must take action. If a jail fails to take action when an inmate is at risk, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. Jails should take several measures in order to protect inmates from violence.

  • Jails should take action to prevent weapons from entering inside.
  • Jails should be adequately staffed at all times.
  • Jails should treat all inmates with decency and respect.

The vast majority of inmate homicides are preventable and involve errors on the part of correctional officers. Sadly, though, jails will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility when an inmate dies in their care. The family of any inmate may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
